Minecraft PvP (Normal): Tips (Java Edition 1.9-Future combat tests)

Click here for the Bedrock version, click here for the Java edition 1.8-. Later during the future combat tests, some of these features will get removed.

No.6: Strafe

Strafing can get its uses when you’re trading hits. If you can dodge some, you’ve already won if you have the same items and both of you have the same crit status.

No.5: Crit

Critting is really useful in 1.9+ due to the fact that you’re weapon recharges. If you crit, you deal 150% of the damage you do.

No.4: Archery Bonus

Shooting an enemy before you get into the melee fight can give you a major advantage. You’ll have more health than the enemy, just make sure that you attack swift due to the fast regeneration on 1.9 to Future combat test versions.

No.3: Shields are overpowered

Shields in 1.9+ are overpowered. They block 100% of the damage you’re meant to take but can be disabled by axes. Other weapons such as arrows and swords will be useless against them. Something you might want to take note is that a shield protects you from a 180 degree angle.

No.2: Use things like fire, lava and suffocation

Armor isn’t as powerful against fire and suffocation unlike other weapons. Anvils are the key to defeating a stacked enemy as a few anvils dropped on his/her head is enough to destroy their G-helmet. Then you have a major advantage in dealing damage, underwater fights, and other things.

No.1: Switch weapons

Swords deal a higher damage per second than axes. But an axe can disable a shield for five seconds. If you’re fighting an unshielded enemy, a sword is better. If you’re fighting a stacked enemy, perhaps the hit-and-run strategy might work, so use an axe if you’re hitting-and-running. If you’re fighting a shielded enemy through hit-trading, switching weapons is the best option. Use things like fire, suffocation and crits for extra power.
